Mason Farms Country Market - Erie, PA

Image
Mason Farms Country Market has multiple locations in Erie. Mason Farms began as a little strawberry cart in front of a family of farmer's home. Two brothers set out on a mission to get money to buy a pony.  The two boys were fourth-generation farmers and began selling strawberries outside of their home. It only took the brothers three days to sell enough strawberries to purchase the pony. Due to their success, the family set up a roadside stand in Lake City to sell more produce. The Lake City location was struggling to attract Erie residents so they began selling the produce at farmers markets in the city. Eventually, the family decided to take a more permanent route and they opened up a store on Peninsula Drive. Their current Peninsula Drive location offers a wide variety of produce, candles, plants, baked goods, decor, and more. They have countless scents from Our Own Candle Company available in candle and wax melt form. They also sell a wide range of br...

Cove Pocono Resort - Lakeville, PA

Image
The history of the Cove Pocono Resorts began in 1958 when Morris B. Wilkins and Harold O'Brien purchased a hotel now known as the Cove Haven Resort in Pennsylvania . Their iconic heart shaped tubs were introduced five years later. The second resort, Paradise Streams, was purchased in January of 1971. That was the same year that Life Magazine featured the heart shaped tubs in an article. In 1972, the Garden of Eden Apple suite was introduced, featuring the in-room swimming pools. Four years later, the Pocono Palace Resort was purchased. The Cove Haven resort was the first of the three to have the Champagne Glass Whirlpool introduced by Wilkins in 1984. In 1991, the Champagne Glass Whirlpool was introduced to the Pocono Palace Resort and today they can be found at all three locations.  Pocono Palace Resort celebrated it's 30th anniversary in 2006.  Cove Pocono Resort celebrated it's 60th anniversary in 2018.  In 2021, the Paradise Stream location celebrated it's 50...

Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Garden - Pittsburgh, PA

Image
Brief History  Did you know that Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh has been open for over 125 years? Henry Phipps gifted the city of Pittsburgh a glasshouse with nine display rooms in 1893. Construction of the glass house was completed in August and it opened to the public later that year in December. The conservatory featured different varieties of plants. Arc lights were installed during 1894, allowing visitors to enjoy the variety of plants later into the night. Some plants featured in one of it's earliest fall shows in 1897 were chrysanthemums, banana plants, and rubber trees. Many expansions took place in the early years, including the addition of propagation houses, the South Conservatory, and an extra room. In 1901, Phipps funded the construction of the Botany Hall, which can still be found on the property. It was created to be used by public school teachers and enhance class trips. The debut of the Desert Room and Cactus House took place in 1902. The first Aquatic Garden wa...

Kinzua Bridge State Park - McKean County, PA

Image
Did you know that Pennsylvania was once home to the highest and longest railroad viaduct in the world? Construction of the Kinzua Bridge Viaduct began in 1881 and ended in 1882.  The original viaduct was made of iron and weighed around 3,000,000 pounds. The viaduct was reconstructed in 1900 with steel to safely serve larger trains and weighed over 6,500,000 pounds after it's reconstruction was completed. The bridge was over 300 feet high and over 2000 feet long.  The Kinzua Bridge State Park was signed into law in 1963, just 4 years after freight traffic was stopped. An excursion train continued to use the Kinzua Bridge between the years of  1987 and 2002. It was determined in 2002 that the bridge needed inspected and upon inspection it was found that the bridge was unsafe. The bridge was then closed to all traffic, including pedestrian.  The following year, the bridge was struck by a F1 tornado and 11 of the towers fell. This tornado struck the bridge after ...

Mattress Factory Museum - Pittsburgh, PA

Image
One of the many attractions here in Pennsylvania is the Mattress Factory located in Pittsburgh . The Mattress Factory museum is a contemporary art museum located in the neighborhood of Oakland. The museum features both temporary and permanent installments. It is described as "a leader in site-specific, contemporary art" on it's own website. This museum, founded in 1977, has had installments from over 750 different artists. The museum and it's exhibits are spread across three buildings in the northside of Pittsburgh. Their current hours are from 11am-8pm on Wednesday and 11am-6pm Thursday through Sunday. They offer general admission and guided tours with a museum educator. Some of my favorite installments were created by Yayoi Kusama and Greer Lankton and can be found as permanent parts of the museum's gallery. Both of Kusama's permanent installments utilize dots and mirrors. One of those pieces also features white manikins. Lankton's installation is an a...
